I saw an old lady, walked slowly by walker, in a wild tunnel in San Francisco last fall.
The closest city is over 20 miles away.
Suddenly I realized there was nothing slower than her in the world.
At dinner, I mentioned about the old lady with other artists.
They mocked her.
Then I figured out that was not an illusion.
So I said, ‘’we should call 911."
The other night there was an artist's talk and I introduced my works to others.
There were 30 to 40 participants, and five of them became my friends.
Few days later, I got a drawing from the oldest artist, Berni Robert, from Bay Area.
He explained that the piece in the drawing could walk like an animal with four legs.
However he could not make it work.
It was a present from him because he liked my artworks.
He hoped I could accomplish it.
Afterwards, I found the drawing was a four-leg machine which was
invented by Russian mathematician Chebyshev.
But I left San Francisco without doing anything.
The return flight took off from New York.
I saw the North Pole through the window alongside the gate.
Later it flew over Siberia.
I often think about the old lady, wondering if she still walks,
and those legs that I had a deal with.
Shih-Pin Hsi

HSI SHIH-PIN
Born in 1977 in Taipei, Taiwan, Hsi Shih-Pin received an MFA degree of Plastic Arts from Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA). He specializes in sculpture and installation of mixed media. The variety of Hsi’s works shows in the combination of variable media, colors, size, and modes. Inside of his works, the artist focuses on structures and appearances of daily objects, then transfer them into peculiar shape and space by deconstruction and recombination. Hsi tries to keep those memories that experienced by objects far from our perception with the practice of classical techniques and his imagination. Based on his life experience, the artist expects to experiment more possibilities in the future.
